Creative Juxtapositions: A Conversation with Jimmy Fallon and Sean Parker

It’s not often you get a geek and a comedian sitting opposite each other to talk about tech, but the exact thing happened at the NExTWORK conference when Jimmy Fallon sat down with Sean Parker to gain an insight into his life.

The pair talk about Justin Timberlake, hacking, the rise and fall of Napster and even Spotify, the music service that Parker wishes Napster could have been.

A bit of tech meta surrealism to end the week. For two iconic individuals that just met they certainly had great rapport together and an easy camaraderie. Parker is surprisingly affable. Fallon is totally a font nerd.

JK Rowling Announces Pottermore.com

JK Rowling is a fascinating, extraordinary and, beyond her writing, a sharp businesswoman. The very definition of smarter creativity. This video, with its beautiful animation, launches the next chapter in the Harry Potter franchise, Pottermore.com, guaranteeing that new generations will discover the world of Harry Potter in the same way we did 13 years ago, when both Ms. Rowling and us, the audience, were very different people. We've grown up creatively together.

Evernote Peek, The First iPad Smart Cover App

What is Evernote Peek?

Evernote Peek is a free app designed to help you study, learn and strengthen your memory. Interacting with Peek is pretty intuitive. Once you’ve connected Peek to your Evernote account and selected your study materials, you simply close the Smart Cover and peek under it to see a clue. Raise the cover further to reveal the answer. To advance to the next clue, just close the cover and repeat.

This is inspired. I'm surprised we haven't seen more apps that take advantage of the Smart Cover. The free app is available here.

New iPad App Teaches Typography

Typography Insight is an accessible, affordable iPad app (just $1.99) that sprang from Dong Yoon Park’s master’s thesis.

While at Parsons, Park says he realized that it was difficult for students in introductory typography classes to see the subtle differences between historically important typefaces, especially when viewed on paper.

Park’s app, Typography Insight, makes it easier to see and compare these detailed shapes. The iPad’s interactive nature even lets you manipulate the typefaces.

For a deep dive into Park’s ideas, read his master’s thesis in PDF form.

This is a brilliant execution of a simple idea, how to teach typography. His thesis is interesting.

For further study “The Elements of Typographic Style” by Robert Bringhurst is a must-read.

IdeaFlight: A new app and a new way to present

Idea Flight is the only tool you need to share your ideas and direct the experience for your audience easily on the iPad. Just download Idea Flight, access a wireless connection, and you're ready for takeoff! Your FREE download includes a sample presentation you can use to test-pilot Idea Flight. http://www.ideaflight.com/app

While Condé Nast continues to work on their digital strategy for iPad magazines they have done something surprising with the tablet, they've released a brilliant non-magazine related app.

IdeaFlight is a presentation sharing app that connects, via WiFi or Bluetooth, with other iPads letting you to have total control of your presentation while maintaining the focus on you and not the big projection behind you. I think this is an amazing idea, shifting presentations from PowerPoint decks that most of the time are poorly conceived and instead allowing for a conversation to take place with occasional support from materials on the iPad. I am going to give this app a try as soon as I can.
