Christian Sandvig: The Television Cannot Be Revolutionized
Recent developments on popular video hosting sites like YouTube, Hulu, and Fancast - as well as research about how audiences watch online video - suggest that online video is becoming a lot more like the old “mass media” system. Not so much the cultural future of decentralized production and daring changes in form some have suggested. Christian Sandvig - Berkman Fellow and Associate Professor in Communication, Media, and Cinema Studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign - argues that choices about the distribution infrastructure for video will determine whether all our future screens will be the same.

The New Newsstand Revisited

Great to see the translation of the concept introduced at the end of last year into a working publication. The designation of a magazine+ is a good way to maintain the connection with the printed publication. There are also a couple of tips to consider when designing for the iPad. It really does look like the magazine experience enhanced, because they focused on creating new metaphors as opposed to just translating the linear format of a magazine.

Photoshop's 20th Anniversary Documentary

In this 18 minute documentary, the founders of Adobe Photoshop - John Knoll, Thomas Knoll, Russell Brown, and Steve Guttman - tell the story of how an amazing coincidence of circumstances, that came together at just the right time 20 years ago, spawned a cultural paradigm shift unparalleled in our lifetime.

It’s almost hard to believe the program is 20 years old. I remember using a very early version of it that had no layers, no history and each variation of an image had to be saved as a separate file. There are some surprising references to Macintosh, ILM, Pixar and James Cameron that relate to the birth of Photoshop.
